This is an introduction to basic concepts in psychodynamic therapy, aimed for medical and psychology students who are learning about psychotherapy, or plan to practice it in the future. Dr. Reidbord is a practicing psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychiatric educator with eons of experience. 🦕 This is the 5th video in a series about psychodynamic therapy. Please note: In the video I neglect to mention that overwhelming anxiety can result from internal conflict. This isn't the "affective dysregulation" discussed in the video. The latter refers to frequent states of rage, deep loneliness, intense shame, and similar emotions that feel out of control and make it impossible to think. Please like this video, and share your thoughts in the comments below! And subscribe! You'll be notified when future videos go live, and I'll get a nice warm feeling. Win win. 😊 Timecodes 0:00 Intro 1:10 Fundamentals, not details 2:33 The dynamic unconscious 3:58 Therapy is for "internal misery" 4:40 Affect dysregulation vs unconscious conflict 5:58 Personality forms in childhood 6:45 Personality (& defenses) have a purpose 7:21 Insight eases inner conflicts 8:26 Why psychotherapy takes time 9:01 Therapeutic relationships ease affective dysregulation 9:58 How the therapy relationship heals 10:41 The therapeutic frame 12:02 "Being" not "doing" 13:11 Refinements #psychodynamic #psychodynamictherapy #MentalHealth #SelfImprovement #psychotherapy
