Deontology
Deontology is an ethical theory that focuses on duty, rules, and moral obligations rather than consequences. Rooted in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, it teaches that some actions are inherently right or wrong regardless of the outcomes they produce. For example, telling the truth or keeping a promise is considered morally required even if lying or breaking the promise might lead to better results. Central to deontology is the concept of the categorical imperative, which means one should act only according to principles that can be applied universally without contradiction. Its strength lies in providing clear moral guidance and protecting human dignity, but it is also criticized for being too rigid and sometimes overlooking real-life consequences. In essence, deontology emphasizes doing the right thing because it is a duty, not because of what it achieves.
