Here we derive the general expression for the second virial coefficient starting from statistical-mechanical principles. We carefully discuss the role of pair interactions, orientation dependence, and symmetry, and explain why higher-order interactions do not contribute at this level. Special attention is given to physical interpretation and to avoiding unnecessary formalism while remaining fully rigorous.
