Disdain Part Two

Part Two of the full-length cinematic adaptation of *Disdain* by David J. Roche. This part follows the desperate medical effort to save the victims of Bergen-Belsen after delousing and cleansing procedures at the infamous “Human Laundry.” The film takes viewers inside the nearby Wehrmacht Hospital - later renamed Glyn-Hughes Hospital - where more than 2,000 patients were treated in the aftermath of liberation. One entire wing of the hospital became dedicated to British medical personnel who contracted typhus while caring for the inmates. We also briefly visit the ballroom of The Roundhouse, once the Wehrmacht Officers’ Mess, before moving to the Field Hospital, where desperately ill survivors were treated under exhausting conditions. Treating the starving prisoners was an immense challenge. Food alone was not enough - the wrong type of nourishment could prove fatal. The standard British Army diet was far too rich for bodies ravaged by prolonged starvation, and in the early days after liberation, many inmates tragically died as a result. The breakthrough came in the form of the “Bengal Mixture,” a simple but life-saving formula originally developed during famine conditions in India. Made from dried milk, flour, sugar, and molasses, it became a vital source of carefully controlled nutrition for survivors whose bodies could no longer tolerate ordinary food.
