When local youth are cited for eBike violations in Huntington Beach, the focus isn’t always on punishment; sometimes it’s an opportunity for education and a second chance to learn. The Huntington Beach Police Department's eBike Rider Training Program pairs a written test with hands-on riding instruction, covering speed management, reaction time, right-of-way, and controlled obstacle courses. Sergeant Mike Thomas, who developed the program with a team of dedicated officers, leads interactive, fun, and informative sessions for both kids and their parents. The course runs for approximately 2 hours and is pass/fail, with the goal of genuine understanding, not just completion. Currently, this type of hands-on training is unique in California.
