THE LOUNGE Bourbons from Cork and Rind Episode: 9 Whiskeys – both purchased from Cork and Rind in St. Charles Mary Dowling Bourbon Finished in Tequila Barrels Known as Kentucky’s 'Mother of Bourbon' Mary Dowling became the first woman to operate a major distillery in 1903 after her father’s death. Her bourbon empire endured in spite of a fire destroying one of her barrel houses, financial loss, and Prohibition. When Prohibition came along (1920-1933), Dowling’s operations were shut down but she sold much of her inventory in anticipation. She dismantled her Kentucky distillery and moved it down to Juarez, Mexico, and constructed a new distillery that became a huge success until 1964. She died in 1930. Mary Dowling was inducted into Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in September, 2025. Rabbit Hole Distillery, decided to create a whiskey and name it after Mary Dowling. Corn and rye are organically grown in New York, while malted barley is sourced from Scotland and England.
