FCTR: Distortion part 1
Distortion is a principle effect in Rock music, but what is it and how can you achieve a good distortion tone? In this week's From Classical To Radical episode Matt explains how an overdriven circuit produces clipping that is actually desirable in rock 'n roll. You can use the preamp section of a tube amp, an overdrive or distortion stompbox effect, or the amp modeling section of a multi-effects unit to get distortion tones. However, since the impedance, pickup type and envelope of a bowed string instrument are drastically different from that of a guitar, there are careful considerations to be made when calibrating guitar-specific effects gear for use with violin. In Part 2 of the distortion discussion Matt will give techniques and tips for applying distortion effects in your playing.
