Feelin’ Okay
This past Sunday, my generation lost yet another musical monster, Dave Mason! He was albeit unsung in the mainstream, yet was a seminal and relevant artist during the 60’s,70’s,80’s and remained active touring up until his death. As a member of milestone bands Traffic, Fleetwood Mac and Derek and the Dominos, he was responsible for writing such classics as Feelin’ Alright and Only You Know and I Know. He also scored a 1977 hit with We Just Disagree. His song, Feelin’ Alright, originally recorded by Traffic in 1968, but made popular in 1969 by Joe Cocker, has been covered by more artists than there is space to list, but some diverse notables are Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, Freddie King, Lou Rawls, Gladys & the Pips, Widespread Panic, The Jackson Five, The Black Crowes, Tedeschi Trucks…the list goes on. Amazingly, the song’s structure is a simple two chord, l-lV groove repeated throughout its verses, chorus and refrains. As a tip of the hat to Mr. Dave Mason’s indelible stamp on the music of my generation, here’s my loose, funky jam over its changes…I’ll call it “Feelin’ Okay”. Godspeed Dave!
