Forward Observers
Forward observers (F.O.s) are infantry soldiers trained to be the eyes and ears of a platoon, assessing battlefield conditions, calling for fire support, and adjusting artillery or air strikes in real time V Corps. In recent years, the U.S. Army has been integrating Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS) directly into their toolkit to enhance speed, accuracy, and lethality. Faster kill chain: Drones allow F.O.s to detect, identify, and relay target coordinates instantly, reducing the time between detection and engagement. Overcoming visibility limits: In dense woodland or urban terrain, drones can see beyond natural obstructions, revealing enemy movements or positions that would otherwise be hidden. Reduced miscommunication: Equipping F.O.s with drones eliminates the need to relay complex targeting data from a separate drone operator, cutting out delays and translation errors. Immediate action: Trained in coordinating artillery, mortars, and close air support, F.O.s can act on drone-captured data without waiting for a separate operator.
