Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs in short) are an appealing alternative towards natural receptors due to their low-cost, enhanced robustness, and versatility. Moreover, they are an animal-free technology and have little batch-to-batch variation unlike antibodies. Nonetheless, even if these materials can rival the affinity of natural receptors, their commercial application remains limited. In this short video, I give a perspective on why this and discuss three important factors namely sustainability, functionality, and biocompatibility.
