GENERAC 11 KW OVERCRANK ERROR CODE 1100
WHEN I RECEIVE A CALL FOR "OVERCRANK" I ALWAYS GO TO VIEW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE GENERATOR. i LOOK TO SEE THE CARE THE GENERATOR HAS RECEIVED. IS IT; LEVEL, CLEAN, INSTALLATION, OIL LEVEL, BATTERY AND QUALITY OF SERVICE. THEN I MAKE A LIST OF BOTH THE ALARM HISTORY AND THE RUN HISTORY TO SEE WHAT PRECEDED THE MALFUNCTION AND WHAT PROBABLY CAUSED THE MALFUNCTION. I SET THE GENERATOR TO "OFF". I PERFORM A "MANUAL" START AND I OBSERVE THE "STEPPER MOTOR" OPERATION. IT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY MOVE AND OPERATE LIKE A CHOKE TO PULL THE FUEL THROUGH THE BELLOWS. THEN PERFORM THROTTLE CONTROL TO OBTAIN AND HOLD 3600 RPM. I LISTEN FOR THE STARTER AS YOU CAN GET AN "OVERCRANK" EVEN THOUGH THE STARTER NEVER SPINS. IN THIS PARTICULAR SERVICE CALL THE "STEPPER MOTOR" NEVER MOVED. SO I CHECKED THE WIRING FROM THE "STEPPER MOTOR" ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE CONTROLLER AND INSURED THAT IT WAS PLUGGED INTO THE CONTROLLER. IT WAS PLUGGED IN SO I UNPLUGGED IT AND DID A RESISTANCE CHECK. USING THE RED WIRE AS A CONSTANT POINT YOU SHOULD GET NO CONNECTION AT ALL TO THE GENERATOR BODY WHICH IS GROUND. THEN TO EACH OF THE WIRES ON THE CONNECTOR YOU SHOULD READ 10 TO 12 OHMS. I READ 9.5 OHMS ON EVERY WIRE EXCEPT THE LAST ONE WHICH READ "OPEN". THE 9.5 OHMS DIDN'T REALLY BOTHER ME BUT THE "OPEN" MEANT THAT THE "STEPPER MOTOR" HAD TO BE REPLACED AND IN THIS CASE GENERAC REPLACES THE "THROTTLE BODY" WITH THE "STEPPER MOTOR" ATTACHED AS THE REPLACEMENT PART. THE GENERATORS SERIAL NUMBER REQUIRED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE RIGHT ONE. THE NOISE IN THE BACKGROUND, AND THE REASON FOR MY COUGH, IS THE FURNACE EXHAUST NEARBY. WITH A WIND OUT OF THE NORTH. RIGHT IN MY FACE. THE OWNER CAUSED AN "OVERSPEED" ALARM WHEN HE TRIED MOVING THE LINKAGE BY HAND BELIEVING IT MAY ONLY BE STUCK. IT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO RACE ABOVE THE PREFERED 3600 RPM. THERE WAS ALSO A "CHARGER MISSING AC" BUT THAT CAN OCCUR IF THE CHARGER SEES THE BATTERY VOLTAGE FALL BELOW 12.5 VDC. IT MAINTAINS A VOLTAGE ABOVE THAT AND WHEN IT FALLS BELOW IT THE CONTROLLER BELIEVES THAT THE BUILT IN CHARGER HAS LOST POWER. (CHANGING THE BATTERY CAN RESULT WITH THE SAME FAULT AS THE CONTROLLER WON'T SEE A BATTERY AT ALL UNTIL THE NEW ONE IS IN / VOLTAGE BROUGHT ABOVE THRESHOLD.) THE BATTERY TERMINALS LOOKED A LITTLE ROUGH AND COULD HAVE CAUSED THE ALARM. ANYWAY, THIS JOB REQUIRED A BIT OF A TEAR DOWN BEFORE THE PART COULD BE INSTALLED. A 10.38 YEAR OLD GENERATOR IN TEMPERATURES HOVERING AROUND ZERO. ON THE RIVER WITH WINDS COMING OUT OF CANADA. (A TIME WHEN YOU WISH THEY COULD DROP THIS OFF AT THE SHOP OR WAIT UNTIL SUMMER.)
