In the days before the Easter Rising of 1916, Joseph Plunkett was hospitalized with Tuberculosis, but left to take his place in the GPO alongside Pádraig Pearse. In the hours before his execution on May 4th, he was allowed to marry his fiancée, Grace Gifford, in a ceremony with the only witnesses being two prison guards.
