Getting Ready (Without Really Spending)
Gearing Up (Without Really Spending) In this episode of getting ready for longer rides series, I build out the Surly Karate Monkey for bikepacking — not by buying the newest or most expensive gear, but by starting with what I already have, picking up a few pieces used, and being selective about where it actually makes sense to spend. The build centres on a Surly 24 Pack front rack, Wald 139 basket, and Wizard Works Alkazam bag — a combination that is surprisingly capable, rock solid on the road, and the foundation everything else builds from. Along the way I swap in a riser bar for a more comfortable position on longer rides, set up a Big Agnes one-person bikepacking tent, and assemble t a full overnight kit including a camp stove and Wacaco espresso maker. There is a test ride for new handlebars, with a surprise stop at mid-ride — a used listing pickup that turned into a small lesson in not always waiting for the perfect kit before getting started. What’s in the build: • Wren One Rack (rear) • Surly 24 Pack Rack (front) • Wald 139 Basket • Wizard Works Alkazam Bag • Riser Bar (used) • Big Agnes Bikepacking Tent (year-end clearance) • Brooks Top Tube Bag • Revelate Tangle Frame Bag • MEC Kleversack • Wacaco Espresso Maker • Yeti 34oz Water Bottle • Generic Sleeping Bag (bungee cord and all) This is part of an ongoing series documenting the slow build toward a bike trip across Canada — starting with what I have, learning as I go, and pedalling the long way. If you’re thinking about bikepacking but waiting until the gear is perfect — this one’s for you. 🚲 Watch next: Getting Ready (Without Really Training) 📍 Subscribe for rides, gear, and the slow road toward something bigger ☕ Support the channel If you enjoy these kinds of rides, consider supporting here: https://buymeacoffee.com/pedallingthelongway #bikepacking #bikepackingbeginner #surlybikes #karatemonkey #cycling #biketrip #bikepackinggear #waldbasket #tourbybike #cycletouring #canadabytbike #getoutside #slowtravel #bikelife #beginnerbikepacking
