Getting ready for a bigger cycling season doesn’t have to mean training plans, intervals, and spreadsheets. In this episode I’m sharing how I’m building toward longer rides — and eventually a coast to coast cycling trip across Canada — through a less intense, more sustainable and ultimately, more enjoyable approach.
This episode covers what I’m actually doing to get ready: riding more varied terrain, converting my Surly Karate Monkey to single speed, building basic bike maintenance skills, and practising adaptability on early spring trails with all the mud, puddles and closed paths that come with the season.
I also talk through how I’m using the Garmin Enduro 3 for navigation and keeping an eye on the basics — heart rate, distance, time — without going deep into watts, power meters or VO2 max. And there’s an honest, no-expert-credentials conversation about food and what actually works for me for riding longer.
If you love being on the bike, riding slow and noticing while holding no interest in becoming a serious athlete — this series is for you.
Next up: Gear — what to bring, what to leave, and what’s actually worth spending money on before a bigger ride.
