Hebrews Study 11- India Interpretation- Chapter 5
Hebrews Study 11 Key Verse Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher (perfector) of our faith; who, for the joy that was set down before him endured the cross, despising the shame, sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Personal commitment: Read a chapter from Leviticus, Hebrews, Psalm 95 and Psalm 110 weekly Correction: There are two incidents with Israel around water in the desert. In study 10, I wrongly mixed the two places. The two mentioned in the Hebrews context is Massah/Meribah which means quarreling with Moses and testing God. This was the striking of the rock and water gushing forth. (Exodus 17:1-7 & Numbers 20:2-13) The other water incident was at the waters of Marah which means bitter. This is where Moses was instructed to throw a tree into the water to make it sweet. (Exodus 15:22-26) Both of these incidents were types and foreshadows of Jesus’ crucifixion and Salvation through the cleansing and regenerating waters! Context for this study goes back to 4:14-5:12-The Superiority of Jesus’ Priesthood Chapter 5 Verse 1-Taken from among men- an Angel was not qualified to fulfill this position. It had to be from amongst mankind-a second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-49) Verse 2 so he can deal gently-compassionate and empathetic because he, the earthly high priest, is in the same broken and fallen condition (Galatians 6:1-5) Verse 3- He, the earthly high priest, is a sinner too. He must sacrifice and be ritually cleansed as well Verse 4-the priesthood is not a self-appointed or politically won seat but summoned and appointed by God Verse 5&6- God the Father is well pleased through Jesus’ obedience as our representatives and symbolically dies for our sins (Roman 6:3-4) also his ministry, through His obedience , is symbolically coronated as the King-Priest (Read Matthew 3:7-17 also read Isaiah 64 the “heavens were open” and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus Nite: Two occasions the Heavens would be opened: Jesus Baptism-Affirming His Messianic identity-Matthew 3:16-17 His Second Coming-Revelation 19:11 Note: Isaiah 64:1-2 oh that you would tear open the heavens. The Hebrew is qa-ra-ta and means to rend, be split asunder, to tear open. The translation to the GK is used only at Jesus’ Baptism when the Heavens were open (eneochthesn) Verse 6- Introduction of Melchezedek- We will go into details about him in Chapter 7 but let’s read about him in (Genesis 14:17-24) Note: Melchezedek brought bread and wine which is the type of the New Covenant that Jesus initiated at His last supper with His disciples. (Luke 22:19-20 & Jerimiah 31:31-34) Verse 7 Jesus’ Prayer was on the Mount of Olive where the olive oil was pressed. He was also symbolically pressed by the weight of the coming crucifixion as He bares the sins of all mankind pressed upon him plus the impending separation from His Father. He sweated drops of blood and had tears of blood. This condition is called himatidrosis which is a rare phenomenon where extreme anguish or physical/emotional stress causes capillary blood vessels to rupture, mixing blood with sweat. It makes the skin very sensitive. (Luke 22:44) Note: His submission and obedience is shown here and attested to. His main leading disciples fell asleep on this watch and would later abandon him but his sincere prayer was heard of God because of his piety. Biblical piety merges personal devotion (prayer & Study) with obedience to God’s commandments, resulting in love for others Verses 8- the Omniscient one LEARNED obedience, compliance and submission to the Father from His suffering (Luke 2:52) Verse 9- the source of Eternal Salvation. The GR for the word “source” is aitios and means the causative force and/or author of Salvation! Verse 10- repeats Jesus’ designation by God as High Priest to the order of Melchezedek mentioned in verse 6. We will spend one whole teaching around this individual when we get to chapter 7 Verses 11-14- Godly correction-Excouragement of Devotion and study of God’s Word- Verse 11- By this time you should be teachers- there is an expectation that there should be spiritual growth Verse 12b & 13- Even worse after 30 years they needed to be Renault the basics of the faith ( Example an adult in banks diapers sucking on a pacifier) Verse 14- solid food creates spiritual discernment-Romans 12:2 renewing the mind, Philippians 1:9-10 abounding in knowledge and 2 Timothy 2:15 rightly dividing (interprets) scripture Let us live out our key verse daily!
