Hebrews Study 9-Ch 4:1-10
Hebrews Study 9 Key Verse Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher (perfector) of our faith; who, for the joy that was set down before him endured the cross, despising the shame, sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Personal commitment: Read a chapter from Leviticus, Hebrews, Psalm 95 and 110 weekly Hebrews Chapter 4 Verse 1 Therefore- Always ask, what is therefore, therefore? Here in verse 1- it is speaking of the previous verses in chapter 3 of those in the wilderness and their disobedience of simply believing (trusting) in God’s promise of rest and dying in unbelief We must fear if- if a person falls short of believing they should absolutely be fearful of a dreadful future outside of God’s rest While a promise remains of entering his rest- this promise was given through Moses and as quoted multiple times Psalm 110 that the promise of his rest was available in David’s day and continues to be available in our time. (see verse 7) Any one of you who have come short of it- the writer here is speaking to our third category of the church attenders who had not come to the ascent of faith in Jesus being the Messiah. An encouragement that they still have time! Verse 2 For indeed we have received good news- This is the good news of the true rest in Christ Jesus called Eternal (rest) Salvation. Not Canaanland but the city Abraham was looking for was a city with an Eternal foundation was not built with hands (See First Corinthians 3:11) 2b- Just as they also did- for those in the wilderness the good news was the hope of rest in Canaanland which was a picture of an Eternal rest to come Verse 3a- believed is the same GK word at Faith in verse 2. Something that salvation by faith is a New Testament doctrine alone, and that the Old Testament salvation is an act of works. That is not true at all for those in the Old Testament that had salvation. They were saved by Grace through faith (the promise to Abraham about his Seed, who is Jesus) Remember the bronze serpent event? Numbers 21:4-9 Verse 3b-5- His works were finished- Reference Genesis 2:2-3 and God rested on the Sabbath Day-Compare these scriptures regarding the true Sabbath Day rest Colossians 2:16 and Acts 20:7 Verse 6-11 since David in Psalm 110 states Today if you hear His voice this means (Verse 8-9) even after Joshua took them into the land of Canaan. It says in verse nine that there remains a sabbath rest for the people. Verse 10- the writer is stating here that just as God rested from his works that those of us who have truly believed have also received an eternal rest of salvation, and we also have rested from our works as God did himself. Simply meaning we do not rely on our works to get saved or continue to do good works to keep our salvation which is our Eternal rest! Our rest is in the finished work of Jesus, our Lord and Savior! Let us live out our key verse daily! (Hebrews 12:1-2) Blessing, Brother Jeff Clay
