How Do Elite Natural Bodybuilders Actually Train?
🧐 How do amateur vs professional natural bodybuilders actually train during contest prep—and does it match what science recommends? 🔬This study gives us rare real-world insight into what competitors really do, not just what theory suggests. METHODS 📊 Survey-based study of 56 drug-tested natural bodybuilders, 27 amateurs, 29 pros, competing between 2022–2024. Athletes reported training frequency, weekly volume, rep ranges, and contest prep practices. RESULTS📈 ▪️ Training frequency: 5 days week for both groups ▪️Muscle frequency: Most muscles trained greater than 1× week, usually less than 3× ▪️Volume: ~8–17 sets per muscle week: back & chest highest, hamstrings lowest ▪️Reps: Primarily 6–10 reps; 11–15 used secondarily 🔑 Key finding: No meaningful differences between amateurs and professionals What does this mean? 👉🏼Despite assumptions, professionals didn’t train with dramatically higher volume, frequency, or different rep ranges. The main difference was experience, NOT programming. Training practices broadly aligned with scientific recommendations—but with more flexibility than lab studies typically allow. This highlights a gap between tightly controlled research and real-world bodybuilding.
