Birds don't just use the same feathers throughout their lives. The feathers fall out, then replace themselves every few months. Each feather grows out of a feather follicle, the same way we have hair follicles. This video explains how a new feather grows, how it gets its color, and how it keeps safe from dirt and bacteria while it grows.
