By popular demand, it's time to talk about sciatica. Sciatica refers to pain that runs down your sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in your entire body. The sciatic nerve is formed by 5 nerve roots leaving the base of your spine and joining into a single nerve, travelling down the back of the leg, and then splitting into two terminal branches once past the knee. It's commonly stated that up to 90% of sciatica cause are caused by spinal disc herniation, otherwise known as a slipped or bulging disc, which is when the squishy centre of the disc, the nucleus, starts to push through the tougher exterior, the annulus. The bulge can then push on nearby nerves and cause pain, like we see in sciatica.
