Whether you’re new to track & field or just want to understand proper javelin mechanics, this is the perfect place to start. In this video, we’ll cover the 5 beginner steps to learning the javelin throw: Step 1: Pick Your Grip 🎯 Learn the three main javelin grips — Finnish, American, and Fork — and how to find the one that feels natural for your hand and release style. A solid grip sets the foundation for control and consistency in every throw. Step 2: Keep the Arm Long & Javelin at Eyebrow Level 🦅 This is one of the most important fundamentals in javelin technique. Keeping your throwing arm long and the javelin aligned with your eyebrow helps maintain proper angle, posture, and stretch through the shoulders and torso — all critical for power transfer later on. Step 3: Pick / One-Step Throw ⚡️ The one-step throw isolates upper-body mechanics and teaches timing between the block leg and throwing arm. You’ll learn how to feel the “snap” of the throw without overcomplicating the footwork. Step 4: Walking 3-Step Throw 🚶♂️ Once you’re confident with the one-step, you’ll add rhythm and timing through a walking three-step. This helps you build control and balance while gradually introducing approach speed. Step 5: 3-Step / Penultimate Throw 💥 Finally, you’ll progress to a 3-step (penultimate) throw — the key bridge between basic drills and a full approach. Here you’ll learn how to maintain tension through your block side, rotate through your hips, and follow through with a clean, explosive finish. By following these five steps, you’ll build the foundation for powerful, consistent, and safe javelin throws — avoiding the most common beginner mistakes like overusing the arm or losing alignment through the approach.
