Nicknamed “rabbit” Johnny Hodges was one of the great alto sax players in the history of jazz. Born in Cambridge, MA he was mentored by the legendary Sidney Bechet and played with Chick Webb before becoming a lifelong member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Hodges also had a successful solo career and was named best alto player many times by Down Beat and Metronome magazines.
