Jonah

If you grew up in church, chances are you’ve heard the story of Jonah and the big fish from children’s books and Sunday school lessons. In this story filled with tension between obedience and resistance, justice and mercy, fleeing and being pursued, we often ask ourselves, “Who are we in this story?” Are we Jonah, his shipmates, or are we the sinful residents of Nineveh? This question highlights our natural tendency to read ourselves into the Biblical narrative, but maybe, we’re asking the wrong question. What if Jonah’s journey, his running, and the storm he faces were never meant to describe ourselves, but instead were pointing us toward someone far greater? As we move toward Easter, we’ll step into that tension and begin to see who this story has been pointing to all along.
