“VIDEO ART IS A TOOL TO EXPLORE OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WORLD AROUNDHula is an ancient art form of Hawaiian dance that is rooted in the belief that humans and nature are connected. Through its movements hula celebrates the beauty of nature. Its stories often refer to plants animals and other elements of the natural world. Hula is a way of honoring and expressing our relationship with nature by connecting us to the divine and spiritual aspects of creation. This hula performance took place in the rainforest of one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea, as part of daily tourist presentations. For this performance, Prema was present in the audience. Much as a painter or photographer would use their tools to create a visual narrative through the use of color, composition, and sound, Prema used her smartphone, without the benefit of a tripod, to record moments of the tour that reveal the intimate connection between the hula dancers and Kilauea, Volcano, uncovering new insights.
