The chelation effect manifests itself as the additional stability of a coordination complex with a polydentate ligand compared to an equal number of comparable monodentate ligands. EDTA has a significant chelation effect that is pH dependent as the fraction of the free EDTA that is in the fully deprotonated form only occurs at high pH. This has an impact on the equilibrium constant.
