Matthew 5:3 | verses #67
Matthew 5:3 NIV 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Before I want to go any further into this verse of the week, I highly encourage you to look up all of the Beatitudes in the Bible as this is only the beginning of it. (Matthew 5:3-12) This is the start of the Sermon of the Mount, which is Jesus's magnum opus speech and one of the most famous speeches in all of history. He introduces His sermon with "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven." To be poor in spirit means to recognize that you yourself aren't able to provide for yourself in a spiritual sense. To be aware of this is a blessing because it shows that you have a need for Jesus our Savior. To lean not on your own understanding, but to trust in God's timing and rely on Him. Amen.
