Maya Fluids have been around for a long time. Nowadays it's more fashionable to use Bifröst Fludis rather than the "legacy" Fluids.
Having said this, I would like to point you to a texture which uses Maya Fluids. It's pretty simple to use, and the result is quite vivid: The Fluid simulation (which is, btw, rather a gas and vapour simulation) is being projected onto the textured geometry.
One of the two geometries in this example is not properly UV-mapped. UV mapping is not exactly my favourite part of Maya ;-)
