Image arithmetic involves performing mathematical operations on the pixel values of digital images. Since an image is essentially an array of numbers, these mathematical operations can be applied to these numerical values. These operations are applicable to 2D images, and can be generalized to different dimensions. Types of Arithmetic Operations Image arithmetic includes several standard operations. Addition: Adding two images of the same size results in a new image where each pixel is the sum of the corresponding pixels in the original images. This can be represented as ℎ(𝑚, 𝑛) = 𝑓(𝑚, 𝑛) + 𝑔(𝑚, 𝑛) Image addition can be used to create artistic effects or to reduce noise in a series of images. Subtraction: Subtracting one image from another can be used to detect changes between the images. The formula for subtraction is (h(m,n) = f(m, n) - g(m, n) Division: Dividing one image by another is useful for correcting non-homogeneous illumination, such as removing shadows. The formula for image division is ℎ (𝑚, 𝑛) = 𝑓(𝑚, 𝑛) / 𝑔(𝑚, 𝑛) You may refer the following books to practice more numerical questions: 1.
