Monkland No. 1 was the first of many thousands of railway locomotives to be built in Scotland. Built in Glasgow in 1831 to a modified version of George Stephenson's "Killingworth" design for the Monkland & Kirkintilloch Railway, it was the first of six essentially identical machines. This is their story.
