Action Research (AR) is a way for teachers to conduct research in their own classes. In an AR study, the teacher identifies a meaningful problem in their teaching context, designs an intervention that might address that problem, and documents the process of teaching and their students' learning. Teacher-researchers collect data to examine the effects of the intervention on both their students' learning and perspectives. The outcome of an AR study can inform future teaching as well as scholarly understandings of how we teach and learn languages. In this workshop, we will introduce the core concepts and processes of AR, and participants will have opportunities to brainstorm studies they could do in their own teaching. We will also discuss how to frame an AR study when seeking IRB approval for human subjects research.
