Welcome back In 1790, Samuel Slater, with help from local mechanics, built America’s first water-powered textile machines in a rented workshop beside the Pawtucket Falls. After a year of improving their manufacturing process, Slater and his partners, William Almy and Smith Brown, decided to construct a new mill for producing cotton thread. Providence merchant Moses Brown purchased a seven-acre plot about 300 feet upstream from the falls. They first built a new dam and raceway, then the mill itself. Slater Mill opened on July 12, 1793. Though small by modern standards—43 feet long, 29 feet wide, and 2½ stories tall—it marked the birth of America’s industrial age. On the second floor, you can spot where the first two additions joined the original mill. Over time, Slater Mill was expanded seven times as its owners tried to keep pace with newer, larger factories. When it became a museum in the 1920s, it was restored to its 1830s appearance, complete with its signature bell tower. In the attic, traces of the fires it survived are still visible. More than just a historic landmark, Slater Mill is a place that transformed America—shifting it from a poor but free agricultural nation into an industrial powerhouse with global economic influence. Over two centuries later, its impact is still felt. Slater Mill marks the beginning of modern America.
