We are the stories we tell ourselves. A combination of culture and biology. The forces that help us engage with the world. Our tools for expression. And for building a path forward. Existentialism (to me) is a personal acknowledgment that the world is incredibly complex and irrational and the only way to really make sense of it all is to create our own meaning. This is the best starting point I’ve found to live an authentic life. But it’s risky. And many societal pressures will repress this. And worse still … an authentic life might not even exist. We might think we’re living out our true beliefs when all we’re really doing is modeling an experience someone else already lived for us. We desire what others desire because we imitate their desires." — René Girard I don’t believe this, but, I accept it as a possibility. It’s why I’m an existentialist.
