Start by using a standardised reading and spelling test to obtain the reading and spelling age of each child who comes to the school at an older age. I think it is sensible to do this for all children who transfer from other schools. It is useful to have this information and helps the teacher to provide reading books and spelling challenges appropriate for their ability.
However, the main purpose of testing is to identify the children in need of support so that intervention teaching can be organised quickly. Information is provided about several types of standardised tests.
