Part 2: Finding gaps in phonic knowledge

The first thing to do is to find out where the gaps are in a child’s letter-sound knowledge. Start the teaching where the first gap occurs. At the same time practice blending and segmenting words that use the letter sounds that are known. Guidance is provided for this teaching. Similarly test the tricky words for reading and spelling. Gradually teach any words that are not known.
