Julian Currier | April 22, 2025 LMU journalism major Billy Dunlap, known behind the mic as pastel.., has quickly and charismatically made a name for himself in the internet’s underground hip-hop scene over the past year. Blending SoundCloud-era-influenced rapping with instrumentation that nods to Brazilian bossa nova and samba, his music offers a refreshing twist on a genre born online. The Minnesota-bred emcee innovatively reworked the arrangements of some of his most prominent tracks for his Tiny Dorm performance, giving listeners a new flavor of a sound we've seen mostly through digital aesthetics. Hearing bongo drums played under the lyric “I’m a walkin’ bucket hit that fadeaway” is a combination few could’ve predicted, but pastel.. showed us how it could be done. His swag and humility is undeniable, and he naturally put on a hell of a show for us.
