Pine Plains Drifter was written while guitarist and songwriter, Dan Kalkan was living in Frankston, drawing directly on the bushland locals call The Pines - that liminal stretch between suburb and scrub near Karingal / Frankston North - and on the spaghetti-western obsession of watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, especially its mythic fixation on hidden gold and the dream of El Dorado (echoed in the lyric “searching for Eldorado dreaming”), with the grin-and-grit line “I am the monobrowed amigo” offering a deliberately rough-edged character hook. The song comes from Hoff and the Nightriders’ album Life With No Meaning (released Nov 16, 2023) and channels the band’s scrappy, self-described eco / jungle / punk energy; the group is a Ballarat-based trio: Geoff Hassall (Hoff) (drums/vocals), Kate Souter (bass/vocals), and Dan Kalken (guitars/vocals) - with the track recorded and mixed by Tom Robinson at Homestead Studios and mastered by Loki Lockwood at Creepy Hollow. Pine Plains Drifter is a psychedelic spaghetti-western born on the suburban edge of Frankston — in the sandy heathland and bushland dunes of The Pines. Inspired by the gold-fever mythology of El Dorado and the Victorian goldfields story-world (a nod to Ballarat’s gold-rush boomtown energy as preserved at Sovereign Hill) , the film follows a drifter chasing a city of gold that keeps slipping between dream and dust. But the twist is that the Pine Plains Drifter isn’t one person. It’s a group effort - a “band” of grubby, monobrowed amigos, part mates, part myth, moving like a single outlaw legend. As their prospecting crew closes in on the score, they spook their rivals into a frantic retreat - competitors bolting through the scrub, purging stolen gold in a surreal panic as the landscape itself seems to shimmer and laugh. Threaded through the film is the spirit of Kitty Morgan, a notorious “female bushranger” figure in colonial folklore and newspaper lore, recast here as an omen of the goldfields: wild, unfixed, and impossible to contain. How it was made: with no shoot budget, each scene was built as a series of AI-generated stills, then transformed into short motion clips with stylised image-to-video effects and edited tightly to the track - an art-film collage where myth, place, and music conspire to make the legend.
