Ply-split Braided Baskets in TLOI
Linda Hendrickson shows ply-split baskets she made in two-layered oblique interlacing (TLOI), and then demonstrates how to work this structure using a gripfid and cords she made from paper ribbon. After showing how to ply-split the outside and inside of a basket, she demonstrates how to unply the two-color cords, re-ply them, and create a two separate rims, one dark and one light. Traditionally, the ply-split braiding structure TLOI was used by men in the Thar Desert between India and Pakistan to make beautiful girths for their camels. They used black and white goat hair that they spun by hand and plied into tightly-twisted cords. The ply-split camel girths featured an inventive display of charming pictorial and geometric designs. Contemporary fiber artists are now using traditional ply-split braiding techniques with different materials to make all sorts of flat and three-dimensional objects.
