In this video lecture, we teach a methodology for tuning controllers using IMC (internal model control) tuning relations. The process is put into open loop. The input to the process undergoes a step change. The user identifies parameters of the process like process gain and process time constant, while approximating the process as a first-order transfer function. The IMC tuning relations give recommendations for how to tune the controller proportional gain and the controller integral gain. The process is finally put back into closed loop to demonstrate effectiveness with a set point change.
