Rethinking Coaching RFPs

When organizations want to bring in executive coaches, they write a Request for Proposal (RFP) that often stipulate that the coach must have direct experience in their specific field. For example, hospitals seek coaches with medical backgrounds, and colleges look for coaches with academic experience. This approach, while understandable, reveals a common misconception about coaching. It makes sense for mentors and consultants to have industry expertise since their role is to advise and provide answers. Coaching, however, is different. Coaches don’t advise—they create the conditions for clients to uncover their own solutions. In fact, one of the greatest strengths of a coach is not having expertise in the client’s field. That distance allows them to bring a truly objective perspective.
