Robot Spine V3.2
Expression from the core of the body is vital to engage people emotionally. Most robots are locked and stiff at their core...and they wonder why the robots aren't being welcomed with open arms. Disney would challenge his junior animators to animate a sack of flower: no head, no arms, no legs. It was to demonstrate the full range of expression can be found in the relationship between the shoulders, the hips and the spine. Hand and face gestures become "emblematic" far too easily and are lost in dispassionate semantics. Motion from the core of the body triggers emotions in the observer. This is a prototype robot spine that honours these first principles of expressive movement. At Rusty Squid, we are tapping into the wealth of expertise and knowledge of the moving arts: animation, puppetry, dance and performance, bringing them into the robotic engineering research community that is closeted away from such fundamental principles.
