The secured Landfill is the final resting place for the Municipal Solid Waste – during the process of integrated waste management. The Municipal Solid Waste, after exhausting the options of recycling and recovery, needs to be safely disposed without impacting environment. The scientific Disposal is done in two ways namely: 1. Bury (Scientific Landfill) 2. Burn (Incinerator) This Video explains the principles and practice of Scientific (Secured) Landfills in the Municipal Solid Waste management process. The disposal Engineering, Operation & Maintenance needs to be done without causing any damage to Environment (Air, Water & Soil) (Ravi Kant) 04.12.21 Scientific Landfills 1. The waste material is permanently deposited in engineered Landfills. (Sealed Pockets) 2. This is a waste containment system, which separates the waste from surrounding environment – Air, Water & Soil. 3. It prevents Leachate (toxic waste liquid) from percolating and contaminating the sub-surface water. 4. It controls gaseous emissions. Landfills, however, are necessary evil. These Landfills, after Closure, need to be monitored for many years for any adverse environment impacts. Our Land on planet Earth is scarce. Landfills permanently block our scarce land. Therefore, we must endeavour to reduce waste to be deposited in Landfills. Waste Segregation is Key to Waste Management. With technological advancement and adoption of best practices, we should aim at zero landfill.
