Secondary Math Education Major

I'm Elyssa Stoddard. I am an assistant professor of math education in the secondary education department at SUNY Oneonta. Secondary Education encompasses anyone who wants to be a middle school or high school teacher. Something that I really like about our program is that students get a lot of attention. So we really care about our students. We really try to touch base with them a lot. We prioritize building relationships with our students. Hi, my name is Connor Ruberti. I'm a senior at SUNY Oneonta and I'm studying secondary math education. The secondary math program has been really great. I've made a lot of friends through it. There are a lot of people who take the same classes at the same time. So we've gotten to know each other. We've gone through this whole thing together. I got lucky. Dr. Stoddard was one of my professors. She's been amazing. A huge help to me both inside the classroom and outside the classroom. Elyssa - We have a math ed technology class that's looking at math specific programs and tools. Things like desmos, polypad, TI calculators. We talk about how to effectively integrate those into your instruction. So it's really cool because we're constantly pulling in new things as they come out. Hi, I'm Abby Draper. I am a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta and I'm majoring in secondary education for mathematics. I'm in a current class. It's math education technology. It's teaching me all about how to technology to teach math. And it's really seeing all these things that I'm going to be using in a classroom. Like, how I can use this, and how I can create all these problems to help my students. Elyssa - If you're thinking you want to be a teacher right now. Your freshman year, you're going to come here and you're going to take a class that involves some field experience. So right away you're getting out into the classroom. You're observing for most of it, but you're going to see if being on the other side of the desk is something that you're interested in doing. Abby - I've always wanted to work with people and I really enjoy mathematics. So taking that further and being able to work with students in a school with math is a dream. Elyssa - We want to get you out there. We want you to feel comfortable in the classroom. Connor - I didn't know how excited I was actually going to be doing it. It's been a great experience every day. Waking up every day is a pleasure. Elyssa - I meet with my advisees all the time, checking in. The other great thing about our program, is that you are a dual major here. So not only are you a secondary math education major, but you're also a math major. So you leave here with two really valuable degrees! Let's say you go through this. You want to be a teacher. You also have that math degree if you want to pursue something else. If students are really interested in that, you could continue on here at SUNY Oneonta into our graduate program. I teach courses in our grad program. I stand on committees. So, if you really like the idea of tech in math ed you could start learning about that as an undergrad, and continue it through grad school. Connor - It's just such a great education program. When I came to visit, you could just tell that there was a culture at Oneonta that I wanted to be a part of.
