Operations in digital computers are usually done in parallel because that is a fastermode of operation. Serial operations are slower because of a datapath operation takes several clock cycles, but serial operations have the advantage of requiring fewer hardware components. In VLSI circuits, they require less silicon area on a chip. To demonstrate the serial mode of operation, we present the design of a serial adder.
