Make sure to squeeze traps at the peak contraction. Allow for deep stretch, try to keep arms relaxed by your side. Some exercises need heavy weight to be most effective and this is one. Don't be afraid to go heavy with shrugs, just make sure you are getting good enough range of motion and you can squeeze at the top for about 1 second
