Before radio control, in the 60s and 70s some model tanks were motorised, some had single motor which could only move forward or reverse. Some had twin motors and a remote control connected by wires to move the tank in any directions. I had one of those and in this video I converted it to radio control using the electronics from a cheap RC car and I think this is the simplest way.
