This is a very old Scottish ballad. I learned it off a LP recording that had been made in a pub when I was in high school and the tale has always intrigued me. The traditional, complete song is very long and I decided to skip most of the verses and write an instrumental interpretation of story in place of them. There are many versions of it on line if you want to hear all the verses.
