The long cable between the motor drive and motor increases in the impedance and results in high dv/dt and excessive overvoltage at the motor terminals.
The excessive overvoltage can stress the insulation of motor windings and cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). It causes partial discharge, insulation aging, and insulation failures, compromising the reliability and safety of the motor system. The video introduces Broadcom’s Slew Rate Control Gate Drivers, highlighting how they improve the switching performance and reduce the overvoltage and EMI. These improve the motor lifetime and reduce overall system costs.
