Established in 1731 from Providence, RI, the Town of Smithfield was originally an agrarian community named after John Smith, "The Miller," one of Roger Williams' original settlers. It evolved into a 19th-century industrial center known for textiles before dividing in 1871 into the current town, Lincoln, North Smithfield, and Woonsocket.
