Solar Projects Boost Mining Power Supply
By Lucky Phiri The Copperbelt Energy Corporation -CEC- says it is working with mining companies to expand investment in alternative energy sources aimed at improving stable electricity supply for the mining sector. CEC Chief Financial Officer MUTALE MUKUKA says the recently commissioned Itimpi Two Solar Plant marks a major step towards diversifying the country’s energy mix. Mr. MUKUKA told ZNBC News that the energy firm remains aware of Zambia’s target of producing three million tonnes of copper. He said the target can only be achieved through collaboration among stakeholders to meet the 8,000 megawatts of electricity required. Mr. MUKUKA said increased investment in solar energy will help mining firms maintain productivity through a more stable power supply. And Zambia Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Officer SOKWANI CHILEMBO said alternative energy projects are important in improving operational stability in the mining sector. Mr. CHILEMBO said the country has drawn lessons from the effects of climate change, which negatively affected electricity generation. Meanwhile, energy expert STEVE MUDENDA said consistent policy direction on alternative energy development is beginning to translate into visible infrastructure growth. More in the following report….
