Souter Lighthouse is a lighthouse located to the North of Whitburn, South Tyneside, England. Souter Point was the first lighthouse in the world to be actually designed and built specifically to use alternating electric current, the most advanced lighthouse technology of its day. Its groundbreaking design and engineering included: Electric Carbon Arc Lamp: Instead of burning oil or coal gas, it was powered by high-voltage electric illumination. Its piercing beam produced 800,000 candlepower, making it visible for up to 26 miles. Alternating Current (AC): It utilized specially patented Holmes magneto-electric generators driven by condensing steam engines, making it a pioneer in using AC electricity to guide ships. State-of-the-Art Optics: Designed by James Chance, the revolving lens system and intricate mirrors not only threw a beam over the sea, but diverted extra light down to highlight nearby coastal hazards like Sunderland Bay's Hendon Rock. High-Powered Foghorn: To combat the North East's notorious sea mists, it was equipped with an immensely powerful, compressed-air foghorn that could be heard miles offshore. Today, the historic site and its machinery are preserved and managed by the National Trust.
