Space Phantoms (Arcade) 1979
Space Phantoms is a fixed-shooter arcade game released in December 1979 by the British developer Zilec Games. It is primarily known for being a "bootleg" or localized graphic swap of SNK's first-ever game, Ozma Wars. While Ozma Wars had a standard sci-fi theme, Space Phantoms replaced the ships with supernatural elements. Player control an angel shooting at witches, ghosts, and "dark spectres". Unlike many shooters of the era that used "lives," this game utilized an energy scale. Actions like firing or getting hit depleted energy, which could be refilled by entering a coffin (the game's version of a docking station). The game is a rare artifact from the early transition of the arcade industry. It was produced by Zilec, a UK-based company that specialized in early arcade machines like Vortex and Reaktor. Because it was a conversion kit, finding original cabinets or artwork today is considered nearly impossible by collectors.
